Leon Trotsky, born Lev Davidovich Bronstein on November 7, 1879, in Yanovka, Ukraine, was a seminal figure in early 20th-century politics as a key leader in the October Revolution of 1917. A Marxist theorist and a fervent revolutionary, Trotsky initially found himself amongst Lenin's closest associates. As an articulate orator and an uncompromising thinker, his contributions to Marxist theory and his role as the People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs, and later the founder and commander of the Red Army, have cemented his place in history. Trotsky's intellectual legacy includes his theory of 'permanent revolution' and his critique of the bureaucratic degeneration of the Soviet state under Stalin.
